All aspects of lithium-ion battery safety

New contacts usually request an overview of lithium-ion battery safety- e.g. what are the risks and hazards, and what are the mitigations, if any. I usually offer a presentation, either in person or online, tailored to the organisation’s sector, e.g. mining, tunnelling, airports, first responders, battery energy storage etc. The presentation starts with a high level look at lithium-ion battery technology, thermal runaway and thermal propagation before exploring the various failure modes (toxic gas, rocket flames and confined and unconfined vapour cloud explosion), with videos to illustrate these. I explore the risk of failure across the applications of lithium-ion batteries from escooters to grid-scale battery energy storage systems. I conclude with a critical overview of the various suppression systems that have been proposed to deal with lithium-ion battery.
