Outline and final battery safety management plans & emergency response plans for BESS planning applications
I offer a complete knowledge of lithium-ion batteries:
- I started my academic career as an electrochemist in 1985 and published my first paper on lithium-ion battery science in 1989.
- I consulted for the-then Nissan Battery plant for 3 years during its construction and commissioning on all aspects of the chemical safety of lithium-ion batteries.
- My research concerns thermal runaway and thermal propagation in large lithium-ion systems, including BESS and EVs, and involves large-scale field tests: hence I have an in-depth understanding of lithium-ion battery failure and its consequences.
- Through my consultancy work and my research I have an excellent understanding of the codes, standards and regulations landscape: for example see my OPSS report https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/safety-of-second-life-batteries-in-battery-energy-storage-systems, one of top 3 downloaded OPSS reports).
- Through my continued work with UK fire services (as a Senior Advisor to the NFCC) and overseas fire departments, I have an appreciation of the risks and hazards of lithium-ion battery systems from the perspective of first responders. Recently, I served on the AESC-South Tyneside FRS working group concerning the design of the new Gigafactory).
I have assisted a number of BESS developers with their planning applications, providing expert advice and liaison with local fire services.
